Why Should You Use Spray Foam Insulation In New Orleans and South Louisiana?
This question deserves one simple answer, polyurethane foam insulation, when properly installed, outperforms in a very “real world way” any other traditional insulation product on the market.
There are so many insulation products to choose from, all of which are quoted in terms of R-value. However, what we are never taught is that the term R-value is a misunderstood concept and a poor indication of the true performance of the insulating abilities of the product. The fact is R-value is determined based on very controlled experimental conditions where real life forces are intentionally neglected to be factored in.
The two most distorting of these forces are convection (air-flow) and vapor pressure (moisture), both which greatly reduce the potential effects of the insulation product. With breezy days, while running exhaust systems in the house and the central air-conditioning system, homes are fluctuating between states of pressurization and depressurization. Also, our sub-tropical climate normally presents a high level of moisture content in the air. The majority of insulation products have their “under factory condition” determined R-values reduced down into fractions…even quite possibly to zero with the introduction of these two forces.
Polyurethane foam will greatly outperform the competing insulation by reducing air flow and the transfer of water vapor. Products such as closed cell foam will even eliminate these forces altogether.
The demand for traditional products such as fiberglass, cellulose, Styrofoam, rock-wool, among many others, is quickly diminishing as these facts are discovered. In fact, building code in some counties around the nation are already adopting such strict energy efficiency policies that it is almost impossible to meet energy code if not using products such as spray polyurethane foam.
In studying and testing the performance of insulation products after installation of thousands of homes we can comfortably state that no other insulation product has ever outperformed properly-installed polyurethane foam. If the future of our country’s insulation practices follows behind other more advanced markets such as Canada, Australia, Europe, and our own Northern American states it is only a matter of another decade or so that the fiberglass industry will lose their market advantage and begin selling polyurethane foam…. as some are now already beginning to do. In the meantime we will continue educating Louisiana homeowners and business owners of the importance of these products and the proper installation of them.
THE ENVIROGREEN DIFFERENCE
Unfortunately, much of the information on spray foam that companies and their sales people tell homeowners is wrong.
EnviroGreen takes an educational approach by encouraging homeowners to get a better understanding of the pro’s and con’s of all several types of spray foam products on the market.
